We've seen an increase in night harvesting as heatwaves have become longer and hotter. While working in the early morning dark is common, working night shifts is totally different to the employee's physiology. Changing sleep patterns result in fatigue, which can result in errors and accidents in the field. A lot of the tips in this training are things the farmworker can do before their shift starts. There is some debate as to whether that should be the employer's responsibility or not, and a lot of it is common sense. But without a doubt, employee behaviour off the clock does have an effect on their safety on the clock. That being said there were some interesting bits of info that I didn't know and felt important to mention. We've just released this training to our growers. Harvust's safety training software includes this training (and more!) in Spanish, and is useable with just a few clicks. Until you become a Harvust customer, you can use it for free!
Side note about regulations: In California for night work there is mandatory supervisor-crew safety meetings at the start of each shift, could we see similar rules pop up in Oregon, Washington, or even federal OSHA? We'll have to wait and see...
